What is too thin

Hi everyone, I have just reached day 62 of my juice feast and find I am still gradually loosing weight. Being 118 lbs at the start of the feast and now 100 lbs at a height of 5ft 5in and starting to feel very very bony. I thought that at this point I would be rebuilding. Am getting in at least 5-6 litres a day plus bee pollen, E3 Live and hemp oil. Is there a point where you can get too thin? I don't know the boundaries. Have slowed down my exercise but am really reluctant to stop.
Any suggestions welcome. I want to continue and don't have hunger pangs but don't want to disappear altogether!

That's up to you. This kind of weight loss is all a part of cleansing in my estimation. You may not start to rebuild until you start eating again. All this is just my opinion from what I've gathered from people's experience and my own experience.

You can try yam juice. It fairly high in calories. Pineapple juice is relatively high in calories. It doesn't seem to spike the blood sugar levels either.

It is time for you to break your Juice Feast in the next 3-5 days! You have passed the stage of being 10% below your ideal weight, and it since you are remaining there on 5-6 litres a day plus superfoods, you are ready to Break your Feast!

The way we calculuate your target weight range is 100 lbs for the first 5 feet of height, and 5 lbs for every inch over 5 feet. Your ideal weight is around 125, give or take 5 lbs.

So get those prunes soaking in the next few days. Think of a place and a person that you want to break your Feast with, and get ready emotionally and spiritually.

Also remember that gaining weight back is best done with leafy greens and high-protein superfoods, as opposed to lots of fat, which can - even when raw - clog your cells with intramyocellular lipids and make you insulin resistant (ie hypoglycemic). This is the most common raw food pitfall.

Get in around 1lb of leafy greens each day with salads, green soups, smoothies, and juices, and you will be set!

Congratulations on a wonderful Juice Feast, Bernice!

With peaceful steps,

I am already underweight, and have been most of my life (never been able to gain weight). Does that mean I shouldn't juice feast ?

Well Mike, I don't know how David would respond to this. He certainly has expert advice and none of us question that.

However, having said that, I can't tell you what to do. All I can tell you is what I would do. I'm 41 days into this and today I weighed in at 125 lbs at 5'9" tall. I'm certainly not going to stop this. For me, that is the right decision and no one can tell me otherwise. However, you are not me and therefore you must decide. I will say that if you haven't been able to gain weight, it probably has something do to with your ability to absorb and juice feasting will certainly help to fix that. Hope that helps.

Thanks so much for this piece of information, David and Katrina! It is very helpful :)

I have a question: I'm currently 5' 4" and 110 pounds. I clearly and obviously have at least 10 more pounds of fat (i.e. cellulite) on my frame to lose--no question. That would put me down at naturally 100 pounds, which would be 20 pounds too small by your calculation. However, genetically, I have an extremely small frame, i.e., no one tells me I'm too thin now and I still look pretty muscular and I do lift weights, so I'm not lacking muscle. My question is: how do I adjust that baseline figure for my natural build/genetics?

Thanks so much!

Scratch that...my scale wasn't calibrated properly. My current weight is 115 lbs, not 110 pounds. Sorry for that! But anyhow, still have ~ 10 pounds of fat to lose, so I'd be curious to know if there is a formula to adjust for genetics/bodyframe size.

Courtney, I'm a persongal trainer, I work out every week and have a lot of muscle. I have a very small frame. I'm 5'4 and I weigh 110. My body fat % is 13.8%. A good way to tell where you are is by doing body fat analysis. This can be done by a personal trainer. Truth be told, I could actually lose about 5 more pounds of fat. But where I am now is a very healthy place to be. A healthy range for women is between 18%-25%. And an athletic range for women is 12%-18%
Just so you guys know:
Normal (healthy) 12%-18%
Athletic 6%-15%
Based on Davids basline calculations I should weigh 120. And I can tell you first hand that at 120 I am definitely 10 pounds over weight.
It really does depend on your body type. I always tell my clients that they will be healthy at the higher percent range, but they will be happier with their bodies at the lower percent range.

Hi Alicia,

Awesome! This information is so helpful. Thank you so much, Alicia :)

I once got my body fat percentage measured when I had been raw for a few months, and I weighed around ~ 125 lbs, via a skin-fold test of three sites, but the bioelectrical impediance method said I was 26.7% fat (though I did seriously accidentally overdose on salt the day before (4 g, yeesh!), lol). If I'm now 115 lbs, that probably puts me in the athletic range now for women.

That's very good to know. I'll probably get my body fat percentage tested again soon, and use that as a proxy for health (while trying to further increase my muscle mass).

Thanks again!

Whoops! A typo. That should say:

"I once got my body fat percentage measured when I had been raw for a few months, and I weighed around ~ 125 lbs, WITH 21.7% BODY FAT AS MEASURED via a skin-fold test of three sites, but the bioelectrical impediance method said I was 26.7% fat (though I did seriously accidentally overdose on salt the day before (4 g, yeesh!), lol). If I'm now 115 lbs, that probably puts me in the athletic range now for women."

Quite right. This is just a very basic formula for giving people a ballpark. From here it can be up to 10 percent either way. Without knowing body types, and just for a ballpark in coaching all people of all body types, this has been the best formula.

Thank you for offering a more specific answer on this forum!

Of interest if you actually calculate the amount of calories in juice, you'd have to consume 4 litres (17 cups) of carrot juice a day just to get anywhere near to 1500 calories. And surely weight loss is a matter of calories in vs calories out. So if your doing a lot of cardio or physical activity, and have a fast metabolism, your gonna need to consume a lot of the heavier calorie juices like carrot, beetroot, sweet potato, pineapple, etc.

When people start eating again after a juice feast, they will be able to consume fatty foods like nuts, seeds and avocados. These fatty foods pack a serious calorie punch, thus daily calorie consumption shoots up as compared to when juice feasting.

Hi everyone
I really appreciate hearing from you all and Mark thanks for being such a consistent contributor through all the juice feast. Thank you David and Katrina for your response. I very much take responsibility for my own health and have done for the majority of my life having been brought up by parents who I was lucky knew about Natural Hygiene. My mum fasted and cured her hepatitis under supervision before she had us so I want you in no way to feel I am too naive on this subject. However I have been rather lulled into a false sense of security with the juice feasting as I have felt such great energy levels and vibrancy almost throughout the whole of my feast. I have experienced days of feeling the cleansing both on a physical and emotional level but have mostly experienced a beautiful mental calmness.
I think now that I have really sat back and assessed that the weight loss is simply that my expenditure energy wise has been more than my income!! (obvious really)
Since getting David and Katrina's comment and initially feeling rather deflated at the idea of ending my feast on a low or even just because I had to I am in a clearer position now. I didn't come into the cleanse with any major health challenges but the last 3 years each winter have had a really nasty cough, last year almost like whooping cough and other generally small complaints. On the feast a verruca I have had years has gone but I still feel I have further cleansing to do to clear my lungs.
Anyway the last 2 days I have kicked back, sat in the sun (yeh we have had some) and gained 2lbs.
My decision is to carry on for a bit and do what I should have initially which is give my body a bit of a rest to enable it to put the energy to cleanse - with a bit of rebounding possibly!! I want to regain the weight on mostly greens anyway so why not try with the juices first.
Maybe I will spend some time going through my journal and getting my juice feast blog up. I would like to support the change that I feel is happening and be part of this healing for the planet.
Best wishes to all.
Bernice
